Yes, my dear friend, It is true, that both the wise and the unwise are after pleasure However, There is a huge difference in the way they secure it: While the foolish is, exclusively, running after pleasure The sage procures it by simply aiming to avoid pain! © Demetrios Trifiatis 13 May 2021

I think your key word is “exclusively” there is the rub, they do not consider the consequences of their actions, or simply don’t care. Mind you wise people know that to endure certain types of pain will be a pathway to some forms of pleasure. Example; if I climb a mountain I will surely experience some pain but will have the pleasure of accomplishment and the view. Or perhaps the pain of child birth. Certain pleasure have pain as a prerequisite.

Richard, my good old friend, when I wrote this poem, I did not have in mind the climbing of a mountain BUT the relationship of people, including carnal relations. I am certain if you see my writing under the new light, you would come out of your dilemma. Blessings.
