Not for the contest No more do I despair writing for contests with an off the wall theme Those that want me to create a nightmare from what was once a beautiful dream. No more do I care about Marvel characters who fight and kill I'd rather spend my time writing silly limericks for fun and honing a particular poetry skill than worrying about meter and syllable tricks. No more do I write for contests where a sponsor forbids me to choose how many spaces I indent each middle line by someone who thinks they're a bard. No, I refuse to write for a yobo whose rules constrict and confine. No more contests do I enter for judges who hold grudges and spite or who offer friendship placements with a wink. It's not fair to good poets who get N/A'd as a backbite I've no more interest in participation with pen and ink No longer care to write for judges who give novel length instruction Yes, rules should be followed, but not to such extreme. It negates poetic license, serving as a poetic obstruction making that contest sponsor, head of his or her regime. No more writing for those who prohibit adjectives and adverbs be used or if the sponsor has never written in the specified form. The power that some feel as a judge can be abused while preaching about dos and don'ts from a platform. Oh, spare me from those who don't know the use of literary devices, metaphors, proper grammar, and over doing alliteration. To anyone who wants to enter contests, my advice is... "Don't take a crown seriously. It will lead to abdication." No more issues to deal with sponsors who change their minds midway through contests because no entries for the theme... bizarre, and decide, without warning they have the right to say, "I can do what I want." Who made them the contest czar?" No blight is this on judges who sincerely host, giving up their leisure time to make PS a place where everyone can take an active part. Those who appreciate good fun in free verse or with rhyme. I applaud the fair-minded sponsors who have a good heart. A few weeks ago, I decided to not enter PS contests any longer.

Quite a list there, Lin, and I thought I was the pernickety one. Ha ha…. Of course you’re pretty well bang on the money in every respect. Shame you’ve decided to abandon contests… but I do kinda get it! Terry

I could’ve gone on about a few more but enough said. I’ve lost interest in entering PS contests, Terry but never in writing. Thanks for your comments.

Lin, a well written poem. I agree with some of the issues with contests and placements. As for myself, I have always tried to be diplomatic and fair. In my contests the directions are clearly explained. Some may think I am picky with my haiku or limerick contests. All contests are subjective to what the contest host is wanting or what may appeal to them. I guess if some are disgruntled by their placements or lack of, then they shouldn't bother to enter them. It should all be for fun, not a war.

You're right in that it should be fun, not to be taken so seriously. So much is taken out of context when some comments are made, and some take advantage of being a sponsor to sit upon a dais. Hosting Haiku and limerick contests as you most often do, creates a necessity to pay strict attention to syllable count. I've never found your requirements to be unjust and/or "picky." Those short forms require their own rules. Thanks for understanding my feelings, and I'll miss not writing for you and several others, but I'll not change my mind. Hugs, sweet friend.

A thoughtful, well composed poem, Lin, addressing honest frustrations. I do love what you write - will make an effort to continue to follow your poems. As for contests, I view each one I enter as a learning experience - a chance to learn some new poetic forms while honing my writing skills while delving into subject matter I never would have thought of to write write about! I am a definitely a process person. Will continue to enter contests as a learning experience. Blessings, dear friend! I am so happy I will still have the opportunity to revel in your poetic talents!

Morning, Sam. I wasn't as much frustrated as I was tired of attitude of some, as if they declared, "Write my way or you won't place." I choose not to adhere to such insufferable rules. Writing for contests became more of a chore than a challenge. Thank you for wanting to read me, Sam. I really appreciate your time.

Lin, I appreciate the effort you put into this and get the feeling it reflects a decision you put some thought into over time. I love that you write for yourself first. I think I entered one contest a number of years ago just to see what it was about. Some poets are very prolific and can produce poems quickly for contests. I am not in that group, but do admire the talent they have, which is so different from mine.

Thank you very much for offering your thoughts, Duke. We're all poets in different ways. One's strongpoint is not another's, but we're all artists.

Dearest Lin, How could I not read your poem. It eloquently articulates the frustrations and disillusionments many writers face in the world of contests. Your words strike with authenticity and a genuine desire for creative expression free from unnecessary constraints. The contrast between the stifling rules imposed by certain judges and the appreciation for fair-minded sponsors is both stark and realistic. Your poem serves as a rallying cry for writers to prioritize artistic integrity over arbitrary regulations. It's a powerful to show the importance of fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment for all poets to thrive. Always a pleasure to read your poems. Blessings, Daniel

Morning and Happy Valentine's Day, Daniel. Rules can be stifling when they require so much thought that they interfere with a poet's vision. I wasn't as much frustrated as I was opposed to the attitudes of a few sponsors. It didn't lend the concept of nurturing to me as a poet. Thank you, as always, for your delightful review.

I just love every stanza Lin you really have nailed it regarding contests, I am entering fewer and fewer these days and I cant understand why sponsors host contests when they can't write the form themselves or they comment on entries before the contest is judged - I got glowing comments from one sponsor - then i got an N/A lol, and do you recall the sponsor who had multiple accounts and would enter her own contests lol. i could go on lol but will just fave this gem! hugs Jan xx

she's not been around nor have her alias's! It doesn't take Einstein to work out what was going on!

Oh yes I do remember her. She’d enter under several of her names and place all of them in her contests. Weird thing, none of those names ever responded to a comment. She hasn’t been around for some time. Thanks for your thoughts, Jan.

I hear you, Lin, and understand the frustration. Entering contests takes a different mindset than just sitting down and writing what one feels the need to write. Entering contests can be time consuming and addictive for some. I like the challenge, but honestly find some of the sponsor's particulars a bit annoying...so I don't enter those...just the ones that strike my fancy. I suppose we poets/poetesses have to make choices. I applaud you for making yours. Enjoy your evening, Sara

Thank you for understanding me, Sara. Some of their particulars are as annoying as they are. I'm going to type a 'ha ha' at that, and some will take offense to it, but I don't give a fig. I have rights to my opinions as much as anyone else.

It’s a real pity all the dos and don’ts, likes and dislikes, that some sponsors insist on in contests, I refuse to write for their desires, I always write for myself first and foremost, and if they place in a contest, good and well, at least I haven’t sold myself short! You certainly pull no punches here Lin, and say what needs saying in a very well structured poem, I myself will continue to enter contests of sincere open minded sponsors, and won’t let a few persnickety judges stymie the life out of creativity! Cheers David

I entered for fun, loved writing for quite a few wonderful sponsors, but I'm no longer interested in PS contests. I always write for myself first. I never liked the idea of 10 first place winners, etc. That's not a contest, it's a gallery showing, but every host has the right to judge as they wish for their effort of holding a contest. I wish everyone well who enters contests. It's a personal choice we all can make. I loved your 'persnickety judges' comment. That's exactly right, especially when that judge(s) think their writing method is the only correct one. They can judge their own contest, but don't judge me for not agreeing with their persnickety rules.

being first in a poetry "contest" is kinda like being chosen first for the baseball team and then being told your playing right field and batting ninth.....you're still thrilled that your in the game and playing. //I'm at that stage in my career that when my mind says Cut - Run...my mind shouts....who ya talkin' to.....

Yep, John. And then finding out that 8 other people were chosen to play the same position on the team. It was all about playing the game until it’s not fun to play anymore. Thanks for your thoughts. ;-)

Good advices if you take contests seriously. I though these contests gives newbies to develop their sills and learn various aspects of poem writing. Winner or N/A, it hardly matters.

Part 2= If the rules or topic are too hard, I will not try them. I write because I love to write. My imagination/creativity can come alive working on a contest. It is fun to win/that makes for a happy day. Everyone wants to win but there are so many winners. We always Win when We Love what We Wrote. I am Honored when My Readers Love My Words or FAV it. Have a blessed/fun day writing away.............

Dear Paula, you are such a kind lady, and I appreciate the many thoughtful comments you leave my poetry. My decision to stop entering contests has nothing to do with winning or losing. It's more of a personal issue. I still enter contests, just not on this site.
Date: 2/12/2024 9:41:00 AM
Part 1= WOW!!! What a write. Please, don't give up on the contests. Everyone can read the same thing but in a different way. We all have different tastes in reading/in life. I try to stay positive in life/with contests. I guess it would be hard to be a judge...................
