Out In the Deep

Somewhere beyond the deep young girls are crying out in their sleep.
Cries that span beyond decades wounding the hearts of weeping mothers
And breaking the souls of desperate fathers.

I can hear those cries resonating beyond valleys
Climbing mountains hovering over buildings singing doleful hymns.
Spirits of hope burden with pain dances slowly to the rhythm of shame,
leaving behind a scornful guilt on the mind of obscure perpetrators.

A sudden disturbing feeling encompassed me and forced me to take refuge on the street. Just a little past midnight I stumbled into the darkened park of the wretched town.

I have trodden upon this ground nights after nights to escape the imperiousness of cold blooded people, and to be at peace with my God. The trees are there to bear witness, they are familiar with my nightly visit and often times they keep my company.

This night was somewhat peculiar; yes it was strange, I felt deep-rooted sorrows. I loosen my seat belt and pulled back the car seat and squatted. I prayed for more than an hour but my sorrows grew deeper.

Not long after I fell in a tiny slumber which abducted me into the heart of the city and landed me upon a very high step. There stood proudly a pair of women high heel shoes. I was somewhat curious so I picked them up, looked at them and put them back on the step.

The night dragged me into another building and reveals to me three young girls lying on beds in a big open space that was not quite a room; the same building housed a bar. The first girl lay on her side facing the east the second lay still, and the third was lying on her back looking at the ceiling. She twitched angrily, turned miserably and groaned in pain.

In the same open space men dressed in full black mixed alcoholic beverages on granite counter tops. Beside them someone’s eyeglasses sealed in a plastic bag looked pitifully at them.

I took the glasses to the girl that was twitching on the bed and she looked at it, and I laid it back on the counter top. Without warning a sound erupted outside, something terrible must have happened, people were in a hurry.

I discovered my self on the top of a very high building, smoke was coming from the other side and people were trying to get out of sight. A woman stood beside me on top of the building pointing a camera in the horizon, she captures a man dressed in black walking slowly from a distance towards the building.

He walked and stopped, he walked and stopped. I could see him with my naked eyes as he approached. The skillful woman anxiously took his photo and all of a sudden I woke up out of my slumber. When I looked around I realized that I was not in a bed, I was still sitting in the car seat.

                                                                                ©2014 Christine Phillips
