Our Have-To

Bees have got to make their honey.
Eagles need to soar to sky.
Dew must kiss the flowers’ faces,
and the wind must sigh.

Songbirds simply have to sing
and wolves howl at the moon.
Butterflies need to emerge
at last from their cocoon.

Instinct guides earth’s creatures, and
that is just the way
God has planned it. They express
what’s in their DNA.

People too have instincts,
but when it is through art
that we express ourselves,
we touch each other’s heart.

A poet garners little praise,
yet he will spend all night
composing poetry because
the poet has to write!

Andrea, a true poet has to create, it is like the air we breathe, we have no choice. I think your poem is great and shows the essence of a poet, it is a winner to me !

Funny how we like our creations. Each a little story. You created a link between us and all the other creatures and forces. We’re all part of something special, and this poem brings it home. I’m smiling!! Thanks for this little bit of heaven.

Andrea. I actually LOVED your poem and struggled with the placement because I was looking for more of what you had in the last stanza... It was a tough call.

To me this is outstanding and a great way to be blown away at the beginning of my day. It is beautifully written, Andrea, and I can't think of anything that would express such more poetically accurate and lifting than you did in this poem. We write because it is the heartbeat of our life; you said it and it is so. Love ... CayCay

Statistics should rhyme with depressing - such deflating knowledge you share, but I suppose if statistics and depressing rhymed no one would read stats. That's my off-the-wall, how-depressing-are-those-stats response. Yi. Curious to understand what won in this contest.

Just looked up the statistics. It was 6% of the population that read even one poem a year (that would probably include us poets ourselves). The number has doubled in 2018, they say due to the political climate with minorities and younger people wanting to express their fears!

I struggled to come up with the one thing I mentioned "why others would read our poems" Frankly speaking, people do not read poems any more, and I would like to tell new poets not to expect to get read unless they are in a community like this one in which they are supporting one another by reading each other's works. Maybe 1% of the population is reading or even buying poetry books (for the pure pleasure of it and not for being part of a poetry site) It's so sad. Anyway, this is what I believe about the population in general. If people are not poets, it might even be smaller than 1% of them reading out poetry!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. This is the poem I wish I had written - it is what I meant to say, but now that you already have, Andrea, I am going to sit back and watch what happens next. BEAUTIFUL!

We are all pioneers blazing a trail for those who follow. Some will read your poem and exclaim, "That is exactly how I feel!" whereas others may say, "I can do better than that!" A spark can light a fire irrespective of which way the wind blows! Aloha! Rico
