One Thought Away

“I'll never be good enough”
“This worlds against me”
“I want to do better”
“But I'm filled with stress and anxiety”

When you believe it's your destiny
You may call it your fate
Understand, it's the voices in your mind
That are creating self doubt and self hate

No doubt, there are external forces at work
That can influence feelings of no hope
They create flawed thoughts in your mind
Therefore, you struggle to cope

So you may ask, how do I stop
The thoughts in my mind?
Wouldn’t that be akin
To remove grapes from wine?

You say change my thoughts
You say my thoughts aren't me
Wouldn't that be like removing my eyes
So that I could see?

What I’m saying is it’s the flawed beliefs
That are troubling you so
It's not above removing the words
It's about clarifying the words, and then letting them go

You begin to let go of self doubt
The precursor to self hate
Follow this lesson
And you'll learn, you determine your fate

Believe in yourself
You are stronger than the internal words
You've created a bad habit
It's hard to un-hear what you've heard

So create a new narrative
Change the thoughts in your mind
It won't be easy
But neither is living a lie

You may ask, the lie?
It's the flawed words you believe
You've learned to get comfortable
With what you call “your stress and anxiety”

Change is uncomfortable
But that's how we grow
Acknowledge the suffering
And know, right now, right here, this is what I need to be whole

Just remember

Take one thought a day
And clarify your view
There’s a whole new world
Awaiting for you

If only. I saw on TV how somewhere(I think California), some researcher or doctor has come up with a treatment to use on the human brain to stop this thoughts and get the brain to work properly. It is what is called depression and misfiring of the brain or wrong routing of the brain. We all have negative thoughts from time to time but some people have them all the time. Sara

Thanks Sara, The best treatment for flawed thoughts is CBT. Just as a computer relies on a programmer, so does our brains interpretation of events. We create our own universe. Thanks again, Kelly

I found your piece quite compelling, you have some interesting thoughts stored here and have obviously taken time to consider the subject. I enjoyed the read, though I found the line "But aren’t my thoughts are me" confusing, skipped over it rather than miss the rest of the poem. Enjoyed. Nick.

You don't remove your eyes to see better...you clear your eyes with drops to see better. You don't remove the thoughts...you clarify. I hope this helps!

Nick, Thank you so much for your response. My poems are meant to be thought provoking. Sometimes I get lost in my own thought process. The stanza should have read, You say change my thoughts You say my thoughts aren't me Wouldn't that be like removing my eyes So that I could see? In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) there is a process where we detach from the thoughts and become the observer of thoughts. The thoughts/beliefs we currently hold typically get classified as "me". We attach to the thoughts. When we detach from the thoughts it allows us to identify cognitive distortions. Once we clarify and evaluate our thought, we are in a better position to change the thoughts.
