Once Again
A gray cold light streams through the windows
My old graying pup comes up to remind me
This dark still morning a breakfast is required
And so I put my poem down this day
Give my Danny his breakfast and treats
And dark coffee with a dollop of cream for me
So it all begins another day a quiet day
Now aching arm with both legs weak
Watching the news all the terror and pain
Some bit of coin sent too little to help
Not nearly as much as they need
This 2023 is not for the old
It seems somehow so many forgot all the hopes
We sought — all the dreams of goodness and help
Aware the world stands even now filled with life
We stood together when we were young
Then fell into work, homes and things
Struggling to live while this American dream
Once again turned into creating
Layers of silver and gold continuing
This pattern from eons of a struggle created
By fear and greed,
Oh my heart grows sad and cold
