I dared to chase that elusive butterfly of love until he landed in my heart. Caught up in wondrous fascination, I placed my trust on its fragile wings but they crumbled all around me in broken promises lying on the ground. I was betrayed by my heartless butterfly, used like a pawn in a cruel lover's game. He promised to love me for all eternity, a promise broken in each word he'd spoken. His romantic letters were works of fiction, camouflaged behind the guise of truth. In sorrow's hands I laid my aching heart. Wounded by deceit, it had tumbled into a deep abyss of sorrow and despair. Like raindrops running down a window pane, my tears flowed into a sea of solitude where I shall linger in darkness until I drown. Forsaken heart of mine, you will perish thus, staring at a sunset, alone on a barren shore. Have you lost all hope since love has flown? I will carve your epitaph in grains of sand with my trembling hand before darkness falls and waves of broken promises carry you to sea. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ June 30, 2017

Hello Lin, This is a story many can tell, albeit not as well as you. Sadness like this can last briefly or even a lifetime. I loved your poem. This may sound a strange thing to say but, although your poem isn't in rhyme, when I read it, I found a rhyming quality to it, Regards Kevin x

Thank you so very much for your kind remarks, Kevin. I'm a rhymer at heart, so I guess it shows no matter how I sometimes try not to. Your visits are always welcome.

Hi Robert. It's a bane I've also faced, but only once. I'm truly sorry broken promises have plagued you. Thank you for reading me and leaving such a great compliment.

sometimes I wonder if the pain comes more from being deceived or from the fact we gave trust to one who deceives

I'd have to share your thoughts, Frederic. For me it's an equal share of anger and humiliation. Thank you for your thoughtful comment.

I know a thing or two about broken promises. A very sad write, Peaches. If you are like me, once that bond of trust has been broken, it's nearly impossible to fix. Once a chain link has been broken, even if you're able to put it back together, it is always the weakest link.

A loss of trust often leads to a loss of respect, and you're correct in thinking that both are hard to regain. Thanks for your expressions, Danny.

Thanks, Jan. The sea always brings deep thought to my mind. No pun intended.
