On the 'United' In the United States

I've often thought about the glue that binds fifty states together What exactly is it substance How does it adhere and accrue There are no treaties, no compacts between and among individual states What binds them to each other, to produce not Ohioans and Oregonians, but Americans I don't think it's the bold brave words Words like Freedom, Liberty, Democracy For each and every person's conception is filtered through his background and perception Rather, it's our Constitution, the Rule of Law, that binds us all Native-born, Immigrants, Young and Old, Average, Short and Tall January 18, 2021 'Unity' Contest Sponsor: Carolyn Devonshire

Congrats on your very wise poem and a well deserved win! If people during their school days were given proper education about their country and world! the happiness of an individual depends on the happiness of every creature in this world. such a world would be an utopia of dreams!

Up, up, and away! Yet it all starts in the basement, where a solid foundation for the individual is constructed. And that takes time, patience, hard work, care, and love. Thanks, Krish!

Sometimes Americans fail to realize that each state is part of a greater union to form a country that will benefit all. Very well composed, Gershon! Congrats on your second place win. Hugs, Carolyn

I think I will do more contests for serious poems as I enjoyed reading these entries even more than reading limericks. All the second-place winners could have easily placed first. Thank you for entering such a meaningful and timely poem!

I think it would bind us more to use our own brains and now follow others blindly; all is never as it seems; think deeper.

O.K... I like your idea... esp. since they say that we use between 5 - 15% of the actual potential of our brains! ~ Trying to think deeper now! :) gw

I agree with first three para. Last one I feel is because common man busy with work has no time. Great write for contest. Good question you raised. Each reader will have his own view. You write so well. Enjoyed reading your poems early morning. Made my day! Thanks!

I think I understand your comment, Rama. Please know that in the USA, students have to pass a rigorous Constitution test in 8th grade (age 13-14) and again in high school (age 16-17). So people who attend school here are (or should be) much more familiar with and respectful of the (genius of the) U.S Constitution than are those who immigrated here after age 17... And thank you so much, Rama, for your compliments on my writing. Just trying my best every poem, is all... With Appreciation, Gershon

I do believe there is more to draw us together, if we are willing to keep open minds and hear each other out - very inspiring entry for the contest, gw!

Thank you, Michelle! And I'm with you here. There is more to draw us together, if we'd only drop the posturing and speak from our real hearts... Hey, you and I are proof positive that people with different views can take a pleasurable cruise! -- Point being, when we examine our views, what underlies them is not that different. We both want the best for our families and our country. Peace and Serenity, Gershon
