Notes About The Poem

On the Beach

The autumn sky is overcast.
The choppy sea is murky grey.
The flustered waves flop on the sand
where the two brothers are at play.

Their trousers rolled up to the knees
they tease the water with bare toes.
Each foot in turn sinks with a squelch
then up it comes and backward goes.

The boys have fun and run about.
The air is cool but they don’t care.
They do not miss the hidden sun;
Of sighing breeze are unaware.

Oh to be young and free of thoughts
that could lay heavy on the mind
and for a moment turn the clock
to distant years left far behind!

Seemingly simple at first, line after line deliver such captivating imagery that a reader is transported to that place and time. The last stanza ending on a nostalgic note is perfect. Congrats on your awesome win, Paul, hugs!

Hello Paul!! I see from the comments below that Congratulations are in order for a Big Win!! And so -- "Congratulations"!! And a "7"!! This is a quite beautiful piece indeed Paul. I really like this one. ("On the Beach" just happens to be the title of short story that my wife Ingrid is working on now in "German," under the title: "Am Strand." We both plan to translate it later into English, and I plan to include it in my second book.) Just thought I would tell you about this! Best Wishes, Gary

Absolutely riveting and beautiful. Your imagery is grand - the sinking toes part was perfect and so were many other lines - the nostalgic tug and relatability work. Yes, I make up words when I'm excited ... CayCay
