On Seasickness

A churning within gill and fin so low
with my tongue, she's tasted the aqua bowl
the dancing inside no place ever goes —

How the brig's see through from stem cells under;
what little chains us to this freshwater —

Like into a swim too far for the pier,
This bubble apart — two sea faces' tears.

                        ---------

Now and then I see you by tank's bulb glow,
then fog up in eyes where my stones are laid —
this lonely space we swim so much we know
our lifetimes, aquarium did us splay —

Never passing to you from coming waves
from this place of fake sea; an odd hourglass
for very most, us both — ...behind plaid glass.

This is disorienting in the best, most surreal way--like grief floating in formaldehyde. The line "aquarium did us splay" hit so hard--what a gorgeous metaphor for confinement and knowing without touching. The language is fluid, queasy, and quietly profound.

Such an awesome poem, Paige. Your words have an unearthly depth that draws me into the tides of ambition and longing. This is both disturbing and stunningly lovely, highlighting the cosmic and transcending nature of ties.

Dear Paige, your words ripple with an otherworldly depth, pulling me into the tides of longing and connection. This is both haunting and breathtakingly beautiful. Your gift turns emotion into pure art. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

This is an aquarium? That's what the images seem to reflect for me, but it's interesting it's about seasickness. Always nice to see what you have written, Paige.

The thought of seasickness is enough to send me in shivers. I am a bad sailor and suffer much even on small waves; on the other hand, I love aquariums.

This wonderful poem, Paige, probes topics of isolation, yearning, and the phoniness of human surroundings. Isolation and the need for freedom are symbolized by the physical and mental confinement that beings (maybe humans or aquatic species) endure in an aquarium.
