For the St. Patrick Day's Poetry Contest of Oliver Mckeithan

A long time ago, I collaborated with the late great Connie Marcum Wong, my dear friend I had brought to Poetrysoup years before she passed away, We created this poem a long time ago, but it used to have a few more verses. I took out the parts Connie wrote to keep it my own. I have never been to Ireland, but I am 1/2 Welsh and part Scottish, Irish, and English. Happy St. Patrick's Day to all.

What Is The Blarney Stone And Why Do People Kiss It?

______________________________________________________________________

"There is a stone there, that whoever kisses, OH! He never misses, to grow eloquent" Author not mentioned at link to Blarney Stone - Blarney Castle I walk the path amid the trees Where footsteps even now are tread, where ancient stones of Blarney please, and lips upon the stone have wed. Enchanting are the turrets here bedecked in autumn's vines of red, the little stream that wanders near, and steps to where I'm being led. The Blarney stone at last I see, so bending backwards now to kiss the stone, my friend is holding me. That’s not a mark I want to miss! I have a thought;   I now can say my mouth has touched where many more have touched upon this stone of gray. How many thousands came before? Inside the marrow of my bones, I feel a thrill . Will eloquence be mine from having kissed this stone? I feel a chill of reverence!

So touching and wonderfully descriptive, Andrea with rhymes that flow like the River Boyne! Congratulations on your win! May inspiration continue to flow within you! Blessings! PS - it is so touching to know you and Connie worked together! Occasionally I run across one of her comments and realize how much I miss her!

Hello Andrea. Congrats on your placement in my contest. I had the opportunity to kiss the Blarney stone but realized they did not clean between each kiss and I dont like hanging upside down 100 feet in the air. Also my wife says I talk too much any way so I didnt need to kiss it. Good one

Funny, how there are different strokes for different folks. One of my female relatives almost threw up when she found out that her husband had kissed the Blarney Stone, and hadn't even washed his face or hands afterward. Oh, well...

I would do it. Think of all those women on Bachelor. All kissing the same guy and whoever he kissed before!

I teared up reading the intro. Your poem is beautiful, stirred me emotionally with its feel. I felt what you wanted the reader to feel after kissing the stone. I couldn't think of a thing to write about, but another part of me did, so I composed a bawdy limerick. Is upside down kissing required? CayCay

Sweetly unveiling a tradition every descriptive step of the way, I like the energetic ending of reverence. The images are pleasurably vivid.

haha. And thanks what you said about Connie. Yes, she was at least half Irish and loved Ireland so much

No need for you to go and kiss that stone Andrea, you already have the gift it bears. Great poem.

I spent two weeks in Ireland. Luckily we had fine weather. Darn my old sick age, I cannot travel now. Lovely poem and thanks for reminding me of the great Connie.
