On Giving Up
On Giving Up!
"Never quit" said she,"when people to your
poetry, languish in disdain or complacency!
"e.e. Cummings never wrote for the fancy
of the love of the crowd!"
She made me some tea with fresh lemon,
And wiped my tears away.
She bade me to read some poetry so
utterly ridiculous!
And reminded me to be very clear and
meticulous.
Said she, "Poetry is not throwing any words
at all on a wall,
And like a fool hoping they stick," that will
be your downfall!"
"You are new to this art, silly woman, you."
"Being smart and cute, may get you some
laughs,"
"But it will take a few years to develop that
true, fine, poet heart in you"
I surmised she was right, when all is said
and done, and bid her farewell.
I thanked God humbly, for this woman!
I put down my pen, and strolled happily,
Bathed in the warmth of this God given Spring and the California sun.
