Old-Fashioned Fools

A bagel shop displays a sign That says, “No dogs allowed,” But rules are rarely followed now And signs leave no one cowed. So oftentimes when I walk by, A canine on a leash Strolls in as if his owner Sees the words, but can’t capeesh.* The doctor’s office posts a note: “No cell phone use inside,” With which most waiting patients Somehow manage to abide. Yet once again, there are a few Who think they are exempt, Which leaves the office manager A little bit verklempt.** I’m tired of people who ignore The stated rules, as well As norms of our society; Decorum’s gone to hell. I miss the days when manners meant You followed all the rules, But those of us who do today Are just old-fashioned fools. *Americanized Italian for understand **Yiddish for frazzled

I love this word "capeesh.* - one of our teachers used to say "capeesh?" and the students would parrot back "caposh" - i wonder if that meant "understood?" do you know?

A true statement. I hate to see it.

In modern times, so many people think the rules do not apply to them. Their battle cry is, "You can't discriminate against me and this twenty-foot snake is my emotional support animal."

So true, Ilene! I enjoyed reading your poem and learning a new word: "verklempt". Blessings, Kim M

Fun and accurate write, Ilene. Of course some rules are a bit of a pain. The last time I used the London Underground, there was a sign on the escalators that said, ‘Dogs must be carried.’ Well, I didn’t have a dog so I had to use the stairs.
