Notes About The Poem

For the Afterglow Poetry Contest of Kai Michael Neuman

Oh, Afterglow, Sweet Afterglow

Double date; in a car’s back seat
could he hear my heart wildly beat?
Love songs played on the radio.
Oh, afterglow, sweet afterglow.

That long first kiss had been so great
I couldn’t wait for our next date.
I daydreamed of how things might go.
Oh, afterglow, sweet afterglow.

Once more he held me in his arms.
“Son of a Preacher Man” had charms,
like in that old song I loved so.
Oh, afterglow, sweet afterglow.

Of course he could not take things far
with me, the teen girl in that car.
Full bliss with him I’d never know.
Oh, afterglow, sweet afterglow.

He was a guy with need for more.
I became a girl to ignore.
Kisses had sufficed for me though.
Oh, afterglow, sweet afterglow.

I love how the reverie is conveyed, the sincerity of the feeling remembered isn't downplayed in part due to its sing-song like repetitiveness and is also sustained regardless of the ex-beau who is still characterized as being complex in that he didn't take advantage of the situation and yet his behavior toward the protagonist afterwards would seem immature. It's a riveting story and a pleasure to hear read out loud.

Thanks for that thoughtful comment. Yes. It was so weird. The older guy went back to my state with his cousins and then basically ignored me. And as far as I know he didn't go out with anyone else either. Just stayed a few weeks and went back to Alabama. I was dying to go on a hayrack ride with him that Halloween but he did not even show up for it. The good thing is I learned he married a redhead and had like 8 of 10. Good Lord. That would have been an awful situation!!!

Andrea, I like your refrain, "Oh glow, sweet afterglow," how nice the experience lingers.

Good girl. In the long run, happily married for many years, you made the right choices. Great example for young people. Give certain things a little extra thought.... May be the better decision.

I was always so good in that way. Only one man my entire life. I think I am a big exception to the rule.

2nd to last verse, for or far? I remember you telling me about this event in your life. I know it was indeed a moment that stayed with you for life. Your write is authentic, and that makes it priceless. Many teenage boys don't give a flying petunia about emotion, that's not what they're after. I would like to throw something at him for hurting you, but glad you ultimately only held on to the 'good' part. LOVE ... CayCay

You are thinking of a different guy I told you about. This one was my best friend's cousin Glenn. I met at age 14. My first real kisses. He was good!

This is funny, Ink. I was in Alabama with my friend and her parents. On the drive back to Iowa, this cousin of my friend was making out with me as my friends dad drove the long distance back up to Iowa. Hard to believe they didn't say a word about us in the back of their car!! They start young down south. My friend dropped out of school at age 15 and married!! It lasted only a few years.
