Off To Battle

Off to battle, they rode so jolly Reached the front line, saw their folly Bullets whizzing, shrapnel flying Grown men weeping, many dying Returning home, they hung their heads Brave hopes and dreams, long since dead

The battlefield is the most painful lesson of all. Sad to think in the 21st century that so many wars are still raging around the world.

A vivid portrayal of the sad realities of war, and the disillusionment and despair it brings.

Reality sets in then comes numbness. Action and emotion expressed well, sadly enough.

Yes. I guess that today soldiers are not so eager to join the fray anymore. Peace, Richard.

I think after their first battle, there are probably many disenchanted warriors, Gershon. War may sound romantic and exciting, but seeing comrades die has to be horrid. Well penned, my friend. Hope you are doing well! Hugs, Carolyn

War is a last resort, as most of us know. Thanks, Carolyn, Gershon

The realties of battle cannot be taught. Once there, the young men find the truth terrifying (their words). At least that's been my experience. This is an expressive write Gershon. Linda

I don't know anyone who's been on the front lines of a war who is an unabashed proponent of more war. That's for sure. :) gw

In war no one really wins. History teaches us that life is always changing. Great countries win but eventually they lose. We will never learn. ~~

You're right, Victor. If man hasn't learned after all these centuries of war, then he never will. :) gw

Yes, dead so that you and I walk free and write Poetry, worship as we please and they, not us,fought for our freedom. I don't think that type of chutzpah exists anymore, sadly! We are too willing to srrebder all our freedoms. The dead who did so out of love of country, would be a joke today and spat upon as war mongers. More Jews and others groups would have died under Hitler had they hid behind their couches. Countries would all have been part of the Third Reich. America.Has surrendered to fear.
