Notes About The Poem

Odyssey of Night

We've sought our sextant, fair and free,
Thus bound with dreams, this starlit sea -
               Should other sentience thrive, perchance,
And wend the depths of great expanse.

Abaft the beam glow maelstroms, bright,
That guide us through the endless night,
From star-to-star we bound and prance,
And wend the depths of great expanse.

Such wonders found, and more to glean -
Strange worlds no eyes have ever seen,
But bent with time, we can't but glance,
And wend the depths of great expanse.

We strive to know the stars, white hot,
And learn the myst'ries physics wrought,
To spin those spheres of grand romance,
And wend the depths of great expanse.

While here-and-there, we'll find a world
Much like our own, with bounties, furled,
Our stores refreshed, we then advance,
And wend the depths of great expanse.

One day we'll reach a realm, quite grand,
With care-worn hearts, drop anchor, and
Upon those shores, commend our dance ...
And wend the depths of great expanse.

Great job. Another world classer, in my opinion. How is it that you did not place? I wish we had more options for any form, any style poems. Anyway, it is a pleasure to read such a gifted poet. Press on! Best wishes, Bryan N.

Remarkable kyrielle of journeying to the stars in search of new worlds and sentient life. Great choice of a refrain, so crucial for a good kyrielle. Any chance this was inspired by reading Asimov? Well done, Bardster, always a pleasure experiencing your amazing word paintings. Blessings ~ John

(2) I HIGHLY recommend the read - it would not be time wasted - you would love it! One of my favorite sections: "We pray for one last landing / On the globe that gave us birth / Let us rest our eyes on the fleecy skies / And the cool, green hills of Earth. Blessings, my friend! :o)

Thank you very kindly, John, and yes, pretty much ALL of my sci-fi/fantasy pieces are inspired by The Good Doctor A, as he was the one responsible for making me truly LOVE reading ... all literary roads lead back to him for me. This particular theme, though, is more directly from Robert A Heinlein and a short story called "The Green Hills of Earth", made up of a number of short songs, and all about exploration of space that ultimately serves to make the explorers appreciate earth all the more.
