Ode To the Scotch Broom

The hillsides are covered with miles of Scotch Broom. Pretty to see but an allergy doom. This transplanted weed should not be here. It causes allergy symptoms most of which are severe. Some one once decided Broom belonged in the garden. That person's now reviled and should be begging our pardon. Early Spring the citizens with their spades go out trying to eradicate all Scotch Broom that's about. But it grows and grows and will not die. Bad for the allergies though pretty to the eye. Beneath my window is quite a display. My sinus reaction is the same as to hay. I sneeze and I sneeze, my eyes water and burn. Lovely as it is, I'd rather have a fern. Oh yellow and bright Scotch Broom you are the most annoying plant, and that is by far. Go away, go away back to your isle. It's allergy season and my sinuses you rile. This ode to the Broom is sincere and real. Please cease and desist, that is my appeal

I have to laugh at myself.....a few years ago, I bought Scotch Broom in pots as a gift for my daughter's house......(not knowing what you so well described in your poem)!! What a dummy I am......... yes.........they finally forgave me after awhile, and after digging up this invasive pest!!

Oh I so can relate to the allergic sinus thing. Not fun with neck-breaking sneezes and red-itchy eyes. A nice rhyming poem. Feel better my friend. Warm Smiles, Connie

Hello Francine, my name is Phillip Rollings. Flipper to my friends and you are a friend. Chef gave me a list of poets to write to and you are on the list. I don't know what a "Scoth Broom" and Chef is a big flower man. I don't know if you read his last post before he went to the hospital or the blog he asked me to write. if you do then this comment will make more sense. He is recoverying well and should be home Sat. Respectfully Flipper

The thistle is also a weed, but it became the national flower of Scotland. There's an interesting story about how that occurred. Good write as usual Francine.

i never heard of this plant before, but maybe that's because i don't suffer from allergies. i really like the rhyme and the flow of your poem - very delightful!
