Listen to poem:
Obsessed with Words
A poet is a wordsmith shaping lines
like a blacksmith bending metal pieces
into works of art and functional tools.
Poets are blatantly obsessed with words
That are selected, rendered, assembled
into verse, like a composer strings notes
or an artist who combines daubs and strokes
to craft paint on canvas into a work of art.
But words are unlike paint or music notes.
Words have meaning, color, texture and feel.
Words are living, vital creatures
each with their own life, heritage and identity.
The poet's bag of words squirms and resonates.
The magical creatures are full of meaning
Inspiring thoughts, emotions and feelings,
even when single and alone in the poet's bucket of words.
The poet's craft is to combine words
into phases and stanzas convey thoughts and feelings
to evoke responses within readers,
triggered by words as single creatures, arrayed in lines,
and combined into meaningful expressions and phrases
made profound and emotional, by words in combination.
A poet is a wordsmith,
crafting and peddling words and lines -
jangling meaning and responses
from words - true, deep and humble,
for words are unaware of their power and magic to inspire.
Words are the true love of a poet's life.
