Never Say Die

Never say die, never give up; as surely as you do, you’re a goner. My late, great aunt said, “Never will I lie down and let death take me; it’ll have to catch me on my feet.” She was true to her word; never said die; and sure enough, it caught her on her feet one morning, at four am after, playing cards. She was far more stubborn than death, itself. Like her, I stand firm; thirty eight years of entries and I still play every day though, I’ve never won; any sweepstakes, lottery, car or house yet; I’ll never stop, give in; I’ll never say die. Instead, some day, they’ll arrive at my door and shout, “surprise!” I hope they don’t give me a heart attack; I’d like to enjoy my win.

"never give up!" I can see your aunt means a lot to you; this is not your first aunt poem. I am starting to truly adore her myself, now. When you write your book she needs to get a dedication.

Thanks, my Mom's sisters loved kids; there was always something fun to do at their homes; baking was big in Mom's family too. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the Pull Candy at Christmastime; it was exhausting.

I love that saying “it’ll have to catch me on my feet” and I love your poem. I can relate. I just keep writing. I don’t know why. But I will until I can’t anymore.
