Never Not

Growing up, one thing my daddy told me, day in day out: Don’t you ever be no ne’er do good never not He said, son, don’t be someone who never know what they’re talking about, Someone who’s always talking out of both sides of their mouth My daddy said them simple souls always be talking a lot, speaking on things they know nothing about Every time they do talk, they’re saying something wicked and wrong They never got nothing good to say all day long Ne’er doing good for no one but themselves, only thinking ‘bout number uno, and no one else A never not can always tell you what’s gonna happen on the next day They ain’t never wrong ... because their tomorrow is always yesterday A never not always wanna be the one who takes the most shots A never not don’t ever think their game is off when they’re missing a lot Never nots never can tell when the water has ran out of the well Never nots never know why their water buckets keep coming up dry I’ve seen a few never nots make my daddy’s radiator upstairs run hot I’ve seen them make his cuckoo go back and forth out of the clock Now that I’m grown, I understand what my daddy was talking about How never nots never clean their potty mouth Ne’er do good, ne’er do right, they just be nodding and winking wicked all their life My, oh my, they love taking credit for things they didn’t do They love to pay from your pocket, when they put their order thru Never nots sho’ love gossiping a lot, telling everybody what somebody else ain’t got Never nots ain’t never thinking ‘bout anybody else, they not thinking ‘bout nobody but themselves Never nots gon learn a hard truth one day, when Death calls, big easy talk has little sway And should God answer, they better keep their mouth shut, if they ain’t got nothing good to say
