Native Trees In Autumn

April and the streets are now
starting to be carpeted by leaves
shed by plantings of European
and North American trees.

Australian trees are evergreen
and drop their leaves all year round
not caring much for the look
of carefully manicured ground.

Some even ignore spring
and spasm in a wintry bloom
spilling bright red blossom
in a two fingered salute to gloom.

Summer, autumn, winter, spring,
native trees seem to always look the same
except in summer, when a few
like to bathe their feet in flame.

I certainly miss the gum trees with all their messiness, Paul: Their scent after rain is heaven sent. Enjoyed this one very much, SuZ

Distinctively Australian, Suzanne, although being near them in a gale or a fire somewhat daunting. We once lived in the hills, tall mountain ash everywhere, summer heat and stormy weather were times of stress. Keep well, apprecuate yr feedback.

Regrettably no, UK and Europe were the go in my travel days, wish I was a bit younger. Autumn in Australia would be somewhat colourless if it were not for all the imported exotic species planted to make early settlers feel at home. Stay well.
