Mystical Memory Dream - For All Good Teachers Everywhere
Last night I saw you standing there
In front of a classroom blackboard
With a piece of chalk in hand
Writing something about Thoreau again
Or was it Emerson or Whitman?
You were telling us or rather me
About the fragility and precariousness
Of this life we lead
While gazing upon you
As that wise owl of ancient wisdom
In this mystical memory dream.
Another fading, fleeting, fast retreating
Neuron - electron flow inside my brain
Is the way you looked so
Exuberant and jubilant
Explaining supernatural,
Transcendental things.
Like love, laughter and the here ever after
And friendship deeply shared;
You rambled on like a gentle song
Wafting through warm summer air.
While one lasting impression from this nocturnal lesson
Was the importance of searching and reaching
Towards higher places while running hard races
Then awakening
To the light of your teaching.
Although the remainder of my vision lacks precision
Its meaning is crystal clear:
You made an impression on many young minds
And on this one it’s lasted
For years.
