My Special Christmas Present

On the night of Eve in our home in the Heights, I strung all the tinsel and turned on all the lights. The puppy was sound asleep and Ella was snoring, my hubby was watching football, so boring. I decided to go outside to see the snow falling, when suddenly I heard a Heavenly voice calling. It was a young woman who seemed so lost, so, I went to the garage sill and swept off the frost. I looked inside and right before my eyes, it was my sister Karen to my strange surprise. It’s been seven long years since I’ve seen her, her death so tragic, it all seems a blur. She was weeping and I ran to her with might, for it was Eve, she shouldn’t be alone tonight. It was so unreal; like a dream I once held, was this real or was I really just compelled? “Why are you weeping dear sister of mine? I’m here now, don’t worry…take your time.” She whispered to me, “it’s just this time of year, so many people are full of joy and cheer. I love Heaven, please don’t get me wrong, but on Christmas Eve I feel I don’t belong. So, is it okay if I stay here with you tonight? will you hold me and make everything alright?” How could I say no to my best friend? we had a connection that shall never end. I was actually sitting with Karen in my garage, was this a fantasy, or just a longing mirage? She wanted me to console her on Christmas Eve, Heaven was beautiful I was taught to believe. I said, “of all the nights this one hurts the most? I thought Eve was the best for a Heavenly ghost?” She whispered, “it really is supposed to be, but every year I miss my loving family. Every Christmas Eve I come and visit you all, but you were the first in seven years to hear my call.” Confused was I about this whole situation, then flowing over me was a heartwarming sensation. So, I took her warm hand and gently rubbed with love, I knew she had to be here instead of up above. I’d make her feel better and meet her every need, this time I’ll make it right, I’ll actually succeed. We said not one word, just held each other strong, for she had to know with me she did belong. We closed not one eye, just gazed at each other, I knew in those moments I’d never find another. Then I heard the puppy bark from the home, the sun had risen, all of a sudden I was alone. There I was sitting by myself and so lonely, remembering how Karen had visited me. But was I actually alone by myself after all? I was utterly grateful to hear my sister call. I was so honored by her company and presence, then I walked into the house and laid the presents. My daughter came downstairs eyes wide open, for she had received the special gift she was hoping. My hubby said, “merry Christmas sweetheart”, but I had a secret hidden deep in my heart. I’ve begged God for years to see Karen one more time, this was my special gift, this Christmas was divine. **true story about a dream I had last night** Christmas Story Poetry Contest Eve Roper December 5, 2017

Laura, congratulations on your win. Dreams have a way of reminding us how special others, especially family members, are in our life. Yesterday was the birthday of the lady I was married to for 20 blissful years. As I visited her grave, I was so filled with memories and realized how Blessed I had been to have been give the pleasure of her companionship for that time. God is good! Congratulations on your win, and Merry Christmas!
