My Shoes

I met a man with hollow eyes,
An empty stare at best.
"Wherever you've been wasn't wise,
Step down and be my guest."

He told a tale of love gone wrong,
Or "over done" by ruse.
A love that had gone on too long
Because he lost "my shoes".

He'd met a gal down south of here
Who made love night and day.
She hid his shoes mostly from fear
She couldn't make him stay.

He became a shell of a man
As the love fest went on.
"I'll find my shoes and leave this land,
By daylight I'll be gone!"

He had to wrap his feet in rags -
He never found "my shoes".
So here he sat with eyes with bags,
Tryin' to shake the blues.

I said I guessed he'd move along -
Her love he'd just refuse.
He said that I had just guessed wrong,
He just needed more shoes.

Thank you, Lin. Your instincts are right...from the very start of the poem I intended to switch him to boots in the last stanza...then, out of deference to the sponsor, I kept it on shoes...thanks for your interest.>Larry
