My Quiet Place -This Mellow August Night

I was right in the middle of commenting to peers at Poetry Soup when the power went off and I found myself in utter darkness and feeling disappointed since it was still only 10:45, a time much too early for night owls like myself. After groping my way upstairs in the dark, I have managed to locate my pen and paper (can’t even find a flashlight!) and here I sit out on my porch step using the little light of a nearly moonless night and of my trusty cell phone. The sound of crickets around me is large! Their chirping fills up the silence, and there's the faint sound of dogs barking in the distance. Even at this late hour, I can hear cars zooming down streets several blocks away, but all of that is overridden by the crickets and the wind rustling leaves on nearby trees. Cooled by the night breeze and feeling undaunted, I begin to work on my little poem.

This Mellow August Night

Out here as I sit on my porch,
cooled by a summer breeze,
I’m soothed by the rustling sound of
leaves on the nearby trees.

The chorus of crickets I hear
chiming in as I write
is a lullaby without end
this mellow August night.

Ok Petal, No new poem, is my turn to badger you for a change lol. Yeah I know, I have all this back catalogue to get through but I enjoyed the moment while it lasted, as much as I've enjoyed this quiet moment on your porch. Take care, Richard

I had this to happen a couple of times with the electricity going off and I wrote some by candle light..It made me give more honor to those who had to do school work by lamp or candle light..Enjoyed reading your work..Congrats on your placement in my contest..Thanks for entering it..Sara

I had to laugh at this one as the kids were down last weekend and we had a cricket chirping downstairs. I found it the next day and no more cricket. So the poor sucker will not lullaby no one. Cute poem . Love Phyl

A soothing, country diddy! You were definitely in the moment when you wrote this verse! When artificial accoutrements fade away, we are left with the rythmic cadence of nature! Oh, by the way, thanks for your sweet comments on my recent haiku, Dessicated Autumn Leaves.

hey andrea! really nice poem! i was amused by your explanation (sorry about the power, though) because the other night i was kept awake most of the night by crickets and i plan to write a poem about how obnoxious they seemed to me! glad you enjoyed their chorus, though!

Mrs. Andrea, a beautiful description of a lovely night. You painted this relaxation of the mind beautifully, but at the same time there is so much energy here, very peaceful energy. Thank you for sharing.
