My Five Senses
My Five Senses (in first grade)
At Jefferson was my first grade,
and so much was appealing.
My senses were reeling because
of new things I was feeling.
My teacher taught great songs to sing.
Such a honeyed voice had she!
I’d raise my hand up just to hear
her dulcetly call on me.
At recess time we’d go outside,
and there was a boy out there.
His face was so cute, I’d just wait. . .
When he looked away, I’d stare.
Those times that we created art,
we used a big jar of paste.
When no one saw, I’d eat a glob
of it! I enjoyed its taste!
When lunch time came, we went to the
cafeteria; my nose
delighted in the smell of foods
which on the air round us rose.
That boy I saw on the playground.
How I longed to touch his hand.
Years passed; another held my hand -
that touch a sensation grand.
Some things that pleased my senses then
are gone, yet I still recall
how wonderful they made me feel
and how much I loved them all.
