This is about a vacation when my batch mates of M.A. English Literature class arranged a get together in a scenic spot in 2006 after 30 years. It was a tedious task contacting all when internet or other advanced technologies were unavailable. Many of us had not seen each other after we left college. With the sharing of memories, the tempo caught on and the eventful days of our college were once more replayed in our minds when we longed for life to take a rewind just for once. Indeed it was an unforgettable vacation.

Once again the annual holidays came, a time of great cheer We, the batch mates of 1976 planned a mega get together We wanted to make it an occasion to be memorized for ever Tracking old friends was indeed a laborious endeavor A lot of discussion and phone calls had to be made And finally the expected date and venue were conveyed We decided to meet at a holiday resort/restaurant In Kovalm, on the shores of the blue water crescent Beside the sea strand with restless waves heaving- A respite from the tumultuous striving for a living The gathering started off as a trickle, some came in time, some, late Many faces were beyond recognition and found hard to relate With nostalgic memories crowding in our hearts And emotions of joy and longing choking our throats We entered the conference hall in small streams Its walls resounding with expletives of shouts, howls and screams We were all set to partake in a communion beyond words and thought And turn the pages of the past with memories fraught Once everyone was seated inside, the formal session began Followed by a self introduction, each trying to be as elaborate as one can Travelling down the memory lane and helping the group reach back The memory files, long forgotten and buried in the unused stack In that salubrious ambiance we were all inclined to renew old ties And rekindle friendship’s flagging flame before it dies Felt we were still young with balding heads and graying hair Expanding waistlines and bodies that needed constant repair We remembered those who were deleted forever from life’s scroll And thanked God for having got a chance to meet within that hall The whole day, we sat and talked, sharing memories of our younger years Gloating on and on about our literature class and our beloved teachers We didn’t know that time was speeding past like a sprinting hound With a sumptuous dinner, our session was finally wound round And with a tearful goodbye, we bade adieu to all our batch mates With a resolve to meet again whenever such a chance awaits Though have traveled far and wide with family during vacations This get together after decades stays happier beyond all proportions Jan. 27.2022 My Favorite Vacation Poetry Contest Sponsor- L. Maintain lines of communique, one way of many, I'm quite sure thereof. Reunions indulge the life of familiars, Valsa, and having some repoire of sorts, been to points of left out or beginnings of innocence my friend! Nostalgia fixates upon a few in hopes of more, but alas, the overlap of time permeates even that of a fickled mind. My best to you and your wondrous entry, Aloha!

After the delayed first reunion, we communicate frequently and the missing threads are well connected. The first reunion was a memorable one that remains indelible. Thanks William for your visit to my page and for the thoughtful comment!

Great to have shared this; ours was bitter sweet for similar reasons. And our college was taken over after apartheid ended (nothing "Indian" remains, though we built it because Givernment gave us a prison/ Salisbury Island for years). Hard work to reconnect, but vital I think

So sad that the institution was taken over.... ! Still the alumni can reconnect ! It is worth reviving old ties ! After our first get together we had three more class reunions. By the time all of us got retired from service and other works . But none of them had the thrill of the first one. Thanks a lot Anil for your lengthy comment!

Clearly, this reunion left a tremendous impression on you, Valsa. You conveyed that convincingly with each and every stanza. Almost as if I myself attended. Excellent write, methinks. Cheers mingled with Tears, Gershon

Yes indeed... ! It stays so lively in memory. Meeting many after several years and the change... Oh... hard to accept . But the feeling of camaraderie submerged all other feelings.Thank you Gershon for your wonderful comment, I relished it so much

What an amazing vacation and reunion you had Valsa, How we've come on in terms of communication, back then it was phone calls and letters now you do it from the comfort of your own home in minutes, with texts and emails. Good luck and enjoy your day. Tom
