My Back Yard's View
I come to the railing of my deck
and look out on the view which every day I see.
A yard which is still surprisingly green
despite our summer’s drought
is flanked on three sides by wire fencing.
The scene is serene, and wind is wafting softly.
The leaves on the maple to my left wave back and forth
much more than do the leaves on branches
of the two other trees directly opposite the maple.
Occasional noise from engines cuts the silence,
for not too far beyond the farthest fence there is a street.
Directly across from my back yard fence is a canal.
It was covered over to provide a smooth concrete path
on which bikers, dog-walkers and joggers I can sometimes see.
Today I notice none of these, but I hear a bird sing,
for beyond me stand hundreds of treetops.
My city long ago was but a giant grove of trees!
Sky is white and slightly tinged grey, yet still the sun shines down
as I watch the limbs of assorted trees in the near distance
dancing.
