My Dream Girl

MY DREAM GIRL

We lived then In Nukeville City
Entirely dependent on nuclear power,
From my point of view as a nuclear expert
An excellent location, for two of us -
I loved my heavyweight girlfriend very much.

Walking very slowly with her
In a suburban street in winter
Heading for McFonald’s burger joint,
The lights went out : blackness, no street lights,
No house lights, no traffic lights, no golden arches, nothing.

She was stricken with fear, and almost paralysed with hunger.
I said, “Let’s go - we can’t stay here and be helpless.”
I knew just where to go - and quick, because it was cold:
To McFonald's. I knew the way by heart.
(Before their hotplates cooled down,
And the burgers congealed.)

I knew what was happening all right, it was
Nuclear meltdown at the plant:
An electromagnetic pulse had killed all electrics.
As soon as she took a step in the darkness
She fell : her legs didn’t work at all
Because they were electrically-operated
And like everything electric, they were dead.

Her weight problem was getting serious, and she needed
Electric-powered legs because she was so huge
And her legs were too weak to support her.
I grabbed (part of) her (massive) hand, saying
“I’ll drag you if I have to......”
Indeed, drag her it was, because I couldn’t heft
Her pre-McFonald's 350 pounds.
