Much Too Close

with her eyes down
                                        to her beak delicately
                                                 outlined by iridescent
                                                 tinges of pale purple,
                                        up close, the white dove
                           is such a lovely sight;

                                                 snuggling in her wings
                                                        are her day-old chicks
                                                               looking like white clumps
                                                               of fine-weather cumulus
                                                        that have floated too low
                                                 and settled in the nest;

                           nearby, a python coiled
                                        motionless, camouflaged,
                                                 fangs poised to strike,
                                                 but up close, a caravan
                                        of red ants stream out
                           of its rotting eye socket !
