Mr Richard Arvin Overton

Mr. Richard Arvin Overton At 109, Still walk Still talk Still drive Still sip soup Early morning coffee Occasional whiskey Butter pecan ice cream every night Still raise a cigar to my mouth Still feed my cats They keep me happy Give ‘me too much food Won’t eat a rat A World War II veteran , The oldest one Joined army 1940 I met the president And shook his hand On a wheelchair I get around Cane in hand keeps me in stride Guitar strings strung in the background Can’t tell you why I’m still here I gets what I want I’m still living alright Church is a wonderful—lovely place Helps me push myself along That church singing—beautiful Church is for everybody But if you gotta go for someone Go for yourself Good to have a spiritual life But you have to live it Me and Ms. Love, 91 We get along real nice I take her every place We have fun together I’ve seen lots and lots of living If you give up You’re through You’re just doubting yourself My time ain’t got here yet And I don’t know where I’m going I may give out But I never give up Marckincia Jean Free verse 08/03/19
