Morning from Shadows
A fellow poet says
don’t start a poem
with looking out the window
but I am—
I am
looking out
the window
to see the lawn
outside my window
has grown.
A neighbor says
there are too many
verses on love,
but restless
I tap laptop
keys to compose
another.
My friend
who transferred
from where I work
to another place—
I saw her last week
and I’m lost reflections
of being with
and without love.
When I saw her
at the front counter
I said hello in passing
and when I went
to check out
she was waiting for me.
I told her I had to get
something from the car
and when I came back
her boss said that she
sent my friend
to lunch break.
I laughed and said
everybody’s got to eat
and had to admit
I knew my friend
from another store.
Now
I look out the window
and a bird trills a song
for words unsaid
and I look
into the light
of a brilliant sun.
