More American Soldiers Die In Vietnam

Oh Nixon what did you do,
Woe will drown and plague you,
Sending more soldiers into Vietnam
Where you know there is no calm,
Only war, killing and death,
The fueling of Americans sent to
Fight in this pathetic war,
Would no longer be tolerated,
The public were angry and irritated.
Two reporters wanted
To expose Nixon’s treasonable ways,
As a President, his days
Numbered, he knew Vietnam was losing,
But continued sending fated young men
In scores of ten,
To this ungodly war,
Kept feeding the newspapers with lies
As a youth sent to Vietnam,
Is tortured and dies.
Reporters,
Plotted and attained highly secretive
Documents, hurting Nixon to his core,
But they were kept in a safe secret store.
These tale tale documents revealed
That the Vietnam war amounted to ‘zilch’
Nixon’s unacceptable involvement
Did not move an inch,
He didn’t care that youths were dying
Nixon did not even flinch.
The public became aware
How could the President dare?
All was revealed by a
Well-known source,
Then history took its course,
Nixon resigned, was granted a full Pardon
By Vice President Ford, Nixon's evil stardom
Dissolved, as he left the White House
In disgrace,
In front of America and the whole
Human race,
The Watergate scandal would be known,
But the truth still had to be told,
And freedom of speech, again to unfold!

Isn't it strange, Putin is doing exactly the same thing. Strange how history repeats itself.

A sad truth of American History that had NO excuse. We must use our heads when we elect people to power; some care about nothing but their own profit. Well penned.

Reading this, Jennifer, and remembering that period of sadly time. Brings me and reminds me of putin, and how the invasion of Ukraine, would have been over now, had the powers to be acted in a different way. Anyhow i digress, sorry. Your poetry here is both informative, and as usual from yourself, poetic. Hope you are keeping well. Harry

I feel we do not know the truth in matters of war. It is even worse now on reporting things. Will we ever know the truth. Nicely written my friend. love phyl

War is a very tricky business, Jenny. Starting a war is one thing; getting involved in one to help/support others is another. But whatever the case, the consequences of rash decisions will never be erased. ~ Warm regards & hugs, my friend / paul

We've been steadily sliding into violence: wars resting on lies, unrest at home, name-calling, shootings, anger, people making big bucks yelling hate, telling lies, insurrection, anger, money, fear...what a great world we've become.

We are all still wondering what it was for, in the first place. Sending people to war is indeed disgraceful, those drafted were often the ones who were killed. Sad and inexcuseable, war.

Such a senseless war, amazing how some people get away with murder.. I know many friends that fought there, my brothers were on the list but never got called. Throughout history he is not the only one who should have been jailed for life. Thanks for the reminder, Jennifer. Hugs Charlie

Your poem is a strong reminder of that period--many died in that unwinnable war, yet we kept going, as you say. Such high cost on humanity. Splendid lookback, Jennifer.

I think of a neighbor I had when I was in the Navy. She had a boyfriend who went to Vietnam. He would send her letters. The last one she received was dire with the scrawl of his pen. Awful too how the returning soldiers were treated. Good write, dear one!

I suppose I'm 'swimming upstream' with this comment. Yet I feel strongly than Vietnam was a continuation of the Korean War disaster - i.e., a war we fought 'not to lose' instead of to win. (Witness the wars we've fought this century, continuations of the same). War is the most horrible last resort there is. Once chosen, however, I believe that one has to fight to win. Period... Thanks for the food for thought, Jennifer. Blessings, Gershon

You depict the strain and subterfuge so masterfully, notwithstanding the fact that this is an extremely uncomfortable chapter in the history of this Country. There have been conflicts throughout the commencement of time, however, we have never acknowledged that they are meaningless. Much appreciate your comments on my poems. I wish all the best for you and yours.

Since the beginning of time war was waged and we never learned that war is useless.

Tricky Dicky as he became known, a right crook if you ask me. If it was you or me we'd be locked up for a long time so why wasn't he.? Tom
