Michael's Rose

A seed was planted in winter,
planted in sweetness of youth,
it was a gift from Michael.
He left me alone in the spring---yet,
his flower grows in my garden.
First feeling trapped, then love,
from this rose in my life.
Our error was human.
Forgiveness is divine.

Congratulations, Charles, on your winning placement in the contest. This poem is beautiful, as I have said in prior messages. I have read it again, several times, each time finding more beauty within its gentle, poignant lines. Very good. Love, Deb ps. Have you given any thought to writing a 'sequel' to 'Michael's Rose'? Do you ever do this with your poetry? I wonder what will happen to the rose, and to the gardener.

ps. The painting is 'The Fairie Fellers Master Stroke' by Richard Dadd, which was painted while he was incarcerated for patricide. With unlimited time, and funds, he painted this picture over the course of many years.

I think poetry is meant to be ambiguous sometimes. Is meant to be the way your heart felt it, wrote it. The question is always, with any art, is it greater when done for one's self, or when done for the edification of all? And yet, what is art if we are the only ones who see it? See painting 'Master of the Fairies', (I think it is called.)

I didn't read this as a pregnancy; but read it instead as an illicit love, which 'Michael' walked away from, the 'rose' being her memory. Which still leaves this as a beautiful, haunting poem in my mind. I liked this poem from the first time I read it, and have since been back to this poem several times. I would not change a thing. Yes, it does seem clearer now, Charles. A sad poem, but I like the way the feeling of being "trapped" converts to love and then finally forgiveness. I always see children as blessings. Best wishes in Audrey's contest! Love, Carolyn
