Memory of Jemez
Orion arisin
on the horizon
at five o'clock
in the morning.
Canyon walls still protect
the midnight dark.
Above them the crescent moon
plays tag with Venus,
followed by a lightning sky,
birthing a brand new day.
I walk on feet still too dark to see,
moving silently through
a fresh desert breeze from
the west that flirts with your face
and meets with the smell
of breakfast just hitting the grill
from the south.
I'm on my way down to the
Jemez General Store
and the Los Osos Cantina,
side by side they meet the day
coming and going.
Their lights just ahead and
the night's silence is broken
by newspapers dropped from
a truck.
I am witness to a perfect day,
if only I could share it with the three
who love to see
Orion arisin.
