Memories On the Breeze

The summer air was still, 'neath golden sky
where lively birdsong filled motionless trees
sun shied away while cirrus clouds passed by
air cooled and briefly birthed a subtle breeze.
The scent was fleeting, but I recognised
the petrol fumes mixed with newly mown grass
the present scene replaced before my eyes
with summer childhood from some decades past.
Dad's Suffolk Punch striping the long back lawn
mums gossipped, back and forth like free range hens
kids coming home, hands muddy, trousers torn
a snack, a drink, then off to play again.
Though age must smother youth, those times long gone
memories on the breeze will linger on

Back to congratulate you Viv, on your win. I haven't been able to post anything at soup because of ads that were jumping all over the screen. The problem has finally been fixed. : )

A familiar memory from this former small town resident. Great line, "Though age must smother youth..." So true. Congrats on your win.

I love the humor that always creeps into your poetry Viv. Like this classic line: "mums gossipped, back and forth like free range hens".This nostalgic poem is going into my Faves! I hope it is a winner! : )

Thanks, Connie, I was going to use 'cackle', but some of the mothers are still alive and I don't want a witch hunt x

oh I love this, Viv. This was the other theme of the five that i had considered because I love nostalgic poems. I think this one will score high.

Thanks, Andrea, to be honest I was struggling to think of something for the other themes, and I am a fan of memories. probably because they're getting further away, and I try to cling on to them x

This is gorgeous, Viv, beautiful imagery and a touch of melancholy that takes me back to my childhood days growing up on the lake. This deserves a fav, (and a good placement). Blessings!

Lovely memories of childhood...a door that's closed but is always open to our memories. Very nice, Viv.
