Melatonin
an absence of trust found
simultaneous with a brand spankin’ new hatred in the air
wrapped up in a sinister sense of pain
brought on by old heartache
led to the last drop of life
by a marching legion of bad memories
LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT
(with all the mean motion in the world &
all the time to get the fight right)
sharpening their razorblades
lighting more torches
loading more guns &
stocking up more bombs
KILLING ALL THE LOVE & POLLUTING ALL THE AIR ABOVE
carrying a list of those to waste like kleenex
every name scratched out except yours
seems today is your lucky day
today is the way it all goes away &
melatonin isn’t gonna help
because these things make their ways into your dreams &
there you’ll be strung up in somebody’s garage
like a deer being gutted out by
a serial killer who has just locked the door
rubbing her/his hands together like Mr. Smithers cuz’
he’s got all the time in the world to get it right---
melatonin ain’t gonna finish you out tonight.
