THE YORKSHIRE WITCH
She set up as the wise woman
and making medicine she began.
Mary Bateman was here name
and magic powers she did claim.
“I’ve come to help those poor people
who with health problems have trouble.
A doctor's fee they cannot pay
so endure pain day after day".
Soon among the poor of Leeds
the word has spread of her good deeds
and of her magic medicine
that purges evil from within
removing every wretched curse
and at a price to suit each purse.
But her ways then create some doubt.
About false claims some clients shout
and one man does loudly complain
but she knows how to change the game.
His next medicine will be free.
No more shouting shall come from he.
It contains salt of mercury
that then will end his misery.
