Man On the Moon

If I could close my eyes and click my heels
and travel back in time,
I'd be at Apollo 11 Launch Pad,
on July 16 of 1969.

The original crew was only three,
but now there'll be one more.
We're headed for the moon,
where no one has been before!

Four days after launch,
we will reach our destination.
If I could only sneak off first, I thought,
it would be a great sensation!

Apollo 11 blasted off,
we left without a flaw.
I took along my camera
so I could film the things I saw!

20 July, we reach the moon.
We're excited there's no doubt.
Armstrong, when we finally land
will be the first one out.

I'm trying to think of a clever way
to beat him to the door.
If I were the first man on the moon,
I'd be famous for evermore!

But then I started thinking,
this is a dream, it isn't true.
I can't be changing history,
so there's just one thing to do!

So, I closed my eyes and clicked my heels
and traveled back to now.
Although the journey wasn't real
I enjoyed it anyhow!

A shocker that this didn't win first place..poetry is sooo subjective, isn't it? I read this to Roger, my spouse this a.m., he thot it was pure magic...reminded him of The Right Stuff movie. He said it was a good thing that Armstrong was chosen ahead of time to "take the first steps" can you imagine his junior trying to upstage his well-earned spot? Apparently, with lil room to maneuver in the lunar module, a fist fight would have become very dangerous. lol. Hope all is well with u and family!

VERY good, Ralph. I was watching it from a Sear's dept store where people were gathered around the tv sets in that dept. What were you doing? Have you heard the rumors that it never even happened? my brother in law is convinced of it. I hope that's not true!

Excellent choice of a place to land after clicking your heals, Ralph. Just think what it must have been like to be on Armstrong's crew! (Some folks today actually believe the moon landing was "staged." Not me!) Superb entry for Michael's contest and I wish you success. Love, carolyn
