Love's a Luxury

The anvil of power weighs heavy
on my heart, forging my decisions.
For my crown's coveted by weaker men,
hatching plots and schemes to usurp me.
The whole world is at my beck and call,
none dares question my authority.
For I rule with a hard iron fist,
unchecked by the glove of compassion.
I'm gifted gold chains, precious stones, and
costly silks to adorn my body.
But, they can't disguise the fact I live
in an extravagant gilded cage.
Peace is maintained with merciless might
squashing any signs of rebellion.
For I and only I am ordained
to rule, mandated by God's decree.
Love's a luxury I can't afford
it can cost me the price of a throne.
And trust is merely nonexistent
in my quiver of indulgent whims.
Time is the ultimate crucible
stripping away my soul piece by piece.
And changing me spiritually
until there's nothing left but a shell.
I'm the alpha, and the omega
war and terror are mine to command.
For I am the harbinger of death,
don't mistake me for anything less.
