Lord of the Rock Pool
I found it when the tide was out,
a small pool of life marooned
in the rocks, a leftover
from four hours ago, holding
an octopus, two starfish
and a crab captive
in a watery cage.
I stared into its shallow eye,
past a milky cataract of cloud
and saw smaller life dart
and dash for cover
in the threads of purple weed,
fleeing from my finger
as it stirred their heavens
and sent terrifying whirlpools
to lash their world.
I lorded over this handful
of bounty left by the sea,
a subdued and captured pocket
of its might, prodding and poking
until I realized
the blue ringed beauty
of the octopus could kill me,
with just one bite.
