Look Up

Towering As towers do A monolithic mass Fills the canvas and the room Green glass mountains Deep and dark and without reflection Draw you in and your gaze Up To a thread of eclipsed sky Where burning In silhouette Clings a raptor To its man made crag 1/13/2020 Cityscape Poetry Contest Sponsor Julia Ward

Thank you Mala! It is based on an actual painting of a factual falcon and building. It still hangs on my wall, but lives too on the cover of former Soup poet Darren White's poetry collection, "Intrinsic Brightness". I am still in love with the peregrine falcons though I rarely see them anymore. xomo

"Green glass mountains Deep and dark and without reflection", I love the imagination. It is tainted yet soothing at the same time.

Thank you Aditi! It is an image ingested that has been seeping from me for years. The building and the bird were real, as is the the painting, I have written of it before (Peregrine Falcon), and a wonderful poet who has since left the soup, Darren White, used it for the cover of his first book of poetry, "Intrinsic Brightness" (you can find it on line). Have a great day! xomo

Maureen, congrats on your top placement in the Cityscape contest. I took a peek at the cover of Darren White's book, and as is the case with good architecture and hope-filled poetry, the eye is drawn in and up. Reading this was a delight ~ John

The last two lines put the imagery into a strong perspective and make us reflect on what we have lost in allowing the creation of high-rise cities. Well done for its high ranking of second place in my contest, Maureen!

This is a wonderful image Maureen. I live close to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, though the capital it's not a very big city; but there are a family of Peregrines that have been living here for years. I can vividly see the image you have written. Beautiful!!! Thank you.

Some of you may have seen this painting, I have been honoured to have it featured on the cover of Darren White's collection of poetry, "Entrinsic Brightness". Though, in my eye, for Darren, fittingly, my falcon transformed into a raven.

I have not Maureen. This is one of your paintings? I will look for it. I have a day off tomorrow. But it's cool that you have a painting and now a verbal painting poem expressing the same subject. Now you need to make a short art film about the same subject lol cover all the bases. (You don't have a tattoo of this on you???)
