Longing In the Night

I lay awake late at night
Sleep escapes me
As I look at dark windows
There’s an emptiness I can’t fill
And worries without answers…
Thoughts begin to be felt
By some pain in my body
As I wish for daylight
Or a clock to turn back time
To feel like I did years ago
When carrying burdens was easier
I know that tomorrow,
I will just keep moving
Until the next night I lay here
Staring into the darkness
Waiting for sleep to return
Maybe bringing back,
A part of me missing
Maybe easing the longing,
Inside of my heart
And the deep loneliness,
The night knows so well

Why is it at night that minor problems seem to grow in size in the dark of night especially when your not quite awake and part of you is in sleep mode. Hope your week is starting well Heidi. Tom

Good question Tom. Things do seem to grow in size at night. Thank you, today is going well. It is hot, but I was able to get another painting done for my gallery. I hope all is well for you. Enjoy :)

When nights like that come and sleep evades us, we have the opportunity to communicate with ourselves and see where we stand. A very emotional and profound poem, my dearest friend, Heidi. Much enjoyed! Hugs xxx

This piece reminded me of Robert Frost's 'Acquainted with the Night.' Well expressed the 'long nights' we sometimes feel when sleep evades us.

Wow! Outstanding, thoughtful write. I find as I grow older, there is a deepening sense of loss. I think it is a festering inclination of just how far I must have strayed from God (somewhere in my long-ago past -- I can't remember). But the sense of alienation deepens with the years, my gut recognizing a longing to reconnect with Loving Source. You have a Fav here in my opinion Heidi. Blessings my friend!

Wonderfully emotive write, Heidi. Many can relate to the feeling of staring into darkness. The voice of your poem is reflective of what the heart feels.
