Long Dogs

Stubborn hunter born again
Couch and bed—new badger’s den
Everything long except legs
If it can’t steal then it begs

A lead paw—they food driven
House train full stop forgiven
Being boss in stare and bark
All the coats from light to dark.

Did you ever get your min pin you wanted. Joe and I had to go thru 2 dogs to find a replacement for Snickers. We got a miniature Aussie that I just couldn't seem to train so we gave it back to the breeder losing a good sum of money. Then we found another Aussie Lucy Lu. She was so sweet. But my daughter divorced last year and one of her kids is allergic to dogs. Had to give Lucy to Humane Society. I really hope they found her a home. She was such a sweet dog

No min pin yet, one day. Currently, I am watching two dogs who may eventually just stay with me. They are Scrub's sisters. Scrub is my little black chiweenie. The one sister looks and acts just like her mother. Already boss of the house. Sorry to hear that you could not keep your dogs.

Congratulations on your winning work. I immediately thought about a Dachshund when I first read it, but it could be a different kind of dog. Thank you for sharing it with us. Sara K.

Delightful, Rob! Our first dog was a corgi mix named Kahlua. Your poem describes her perfectly! Such a fun ode to "long" dogs. Enjoyed!

We've had various dogs through the years, but never had a short legged one like yours. ~ Congratulations. // paul

One of the reasons I have more than one dog and I try to stagger the ages. When they pass, the void is not total since it is a package deal. Maybe one day, you get another. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Just read all you told me in my comment below. (Normally I don't see responses to my comments) You are really hooked on this breed. Sorry about your dogs that passed away . Joe liked Australian shepherds that I got stuck walking. Finally he realized the senselessness of a breed that doesn't fit our life style. Now all we have is my cat Chico. I wouldn't mind a little dog one day though!

Love the long dogs, but they take forever to housebreak. Want to get a min pin (miniature pinscher) too one day. I hope you get a little dog. My son and his GF got a cat some months back. I live near a farm, so usually the field mice like to winter in my house. This year, only a couple. Not sure if they smell the cat and are scared off or it is just coincidence.

Love this, Rob. It reminds me of the first dog I ever had, a beagle...but he had short legs (lol) Congratulations on your placement in my contest! Thanks for entering. Charlie

' If it can’t steal then it begs, ' and everything long, except legs. ' Okay, I'm smiling at this because, I can see this image in my mind. : ) Easy to carry around, I'm guessing. Hugs, Brandy

Not too bad to carry, just harder to pick up off the ground due to the short legs. Have to support the backs so I carry mine on my forearm like a baby. Hugs back to you.

I understood this one because I know how much you like this breed of dog. Do you still have that one you had about ten years ago?

That was Boo - a chiweenie. Had to put him down in August of 2021. I got a mini dachshund (named Echo) after him, but she was hit and killed by a car in April of 2024. Several weeks after that, I got Seirra, another mini dachshund. I also have Tango (Chihuahua) and a pup of Echo's named Scrub.
