Quatern ~ Old or New Contest Sponsor Joseph May [November 2023]

Placed 1st

Green speckled lizard on the wall Laps up the warmth on satin skin It lies serenely in repose A mellow dream it holds within. Beneath the rays of shining sun Green speckled lizard on the wall Enjoys the feel of jagged stones As end of summer turns to fall. It does not move; beyond a doubt It is caressed by nature’s pill Green speckled lizard on the wall Is drugged in bliss; the air is still. As time goes by and evening nears The homeward sparrows fly and call The darkness falls but now there’s no Green speckled lizard on the wall. ------------------------------------

Dear Paul, my wonderful poetry friend, I enjoyed a day in the life of the "Green speckled lizard on the wall." Your observant poem is full of daylight, warmth, life, texture and the hint of twilight... your last three lines are a grand finale to a beautiful poem. As darkness falls one hopes the Green speckled lizard on the wall is safely tucked away for the night. Your refrain works seamlessly and with great effect in each stanza. Congratulations for your win in Joseph's contest, I'm thrilled to share the podium with you. Warmest wishes and hugs.. ~Susan

It 's fun to see who wrote this unusual one. I would have scored it higher but you had at least one line with only seven syllables. Second line. I quite enjoyed this one because it is so unique! Congrats in my contest.

Hi Andrea! You are perfectly right!! I have been naughty; should never have made a mistake like that :)) But you enjoyed the write, so that makes up for it:) [2nd line now becomes: "Laps up the warmth on satin skin"] Thanks Andrea; looking forward to the next contest! // paul

Sometimes its hard to get the key sentence to fit in all four places. You carried it off nicely.

Hi Mark...so pleased to have you stopping by! Yes, that key sentence is the real tricky part, especially if rhyme is being used. Glad you feel that it fitted in well...thanks. cu around. // paul
