Lingers-edited in the morn
it’s past sleep
the presence of quietness lingers
dark cheeks
against the window pane
but there’s light
on my side
of the street
Christmas lingers
like electricity
surging through wires
and the switch
won’t be turned off
quite yet
my tree stands tall
in its present darkness
because
it’s past sleep
but my mind lingers
over this poem
that I must complete
before
I climb under warm sheets
and I switch
to dreams
of
proverbial sugar plums
no crumbs
left for the eve
of a new year
but
that is a story
for
the morrow
no longer
will I linger
it’s quite late
I’m off
to bed
ready
set
snooze
and I linger
til
ten o’clock
as a bright
then brighter
light lingers
