Lilly’s First Walk
Lilly’s first real day as part of our pack
Means she takes her first real walk, ever
Which for a nine month old pug
Is coming kind of late to the game
But it’s her first day
Outside the fenced little yard
Of her breeder’s home
Surrounded there by her old pack
Of mom and dad and various siblings
So off we head on our usual afternoon walk
While Lilly just stands there watching
In her warm little green fleece jacket
Wondering what could possibly be expected
Unsure what walking across unmowed pasture
Is even like
Or where it could possibly lead
Let alone why
Anyone would ever want to do it!
But after some coaxing she figures out
We’re not coming back
And so from then on
It’s a matter of catch up
Trotting fast to keep up with the humans
Catching up to the big dogs
Who somehow seem to be having
Such a great time
While little Miss Lilly is just unsure,
Overwhelmed with all the open spaces,
And unknown destinations
Of her first walk
Her first steps outside
The stunted youth
She’s known so far
To go there and back again
To a well earned exhausted nap
Within the comfort zone
Of her new found home
