Notes About The Poem

We have the joy of life and the sadness of death. We also experience a variety of good and bad things during our brief existence. For whom can good outweigh bad? While loss and hurt are tough; acts of love, giving, and forgiveness change a frown to a smile.

life's blessing and curse

Joy and pain are joined at the hip
Can't we yet untangle that grip?
While hurt has a fang
Yin’s mad about Yang
Though sadness appears on the trip

Thanks for sharing this... exposing your wise thoughts through your limerick. Meanwhile, I greet you with the love of the Lord, expressed by John 3:16 of the Bible, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Be blessed.

Thanks for reading and your comment Beata. My thinking includes that happiness and sadness make up part of existence. I often joke using the expression, "Every silver lining has a cloud" which is the reverse of the usual take. While not a religious person, I suggest taking anything on that helps one feel good emotionally provided it doesn't hurt anyone else. Unfortunately, a lot of unnecessary bad occurred throughout history and happens even today due to various disputes about religious and cultural beliefs.

Two strong state of beings joy & sadness, & born into it, as the title suggests, we never stood a chance. We have the rest of our lives to enjoy what we can & leave behind what we can't love. My vision finalized. I adore this one, Duke & I too am faving~

Thanks Anaya. I am more and more struck as I live at how sadness intertwines with success and happiness. I suppose it has to do with the passage of time and the inevitable changes and losses we go through. As you say, let's enjoy what we can and try to focus on the positive aspects of all we have. Smiles!!

Thanks Maureen. I had a lot of fun thinking about this. I sometimes welcome sadness when it is the result of independence for someone I am fond of. The passage of time itself is something we have to reckon with. Sending smiles!!!!

Hello Duke, It has been a little while and hope you are doing well and surviving the snow. You’ve tucked a whole philosophy lesson into a handful of playful lines with that tug-of-war between joy and ache, yin and yang, the way life insists on being both at once. To me it is a light touch carrying a true insight. Winter Blessings, Duke Daniel

Thanks Daniel. I hope you are well and will check out some of what you have written recently. BTW, you are very kind as reflected in your comment. I do try to be brief. There was a professor at the college I went to (I never had the pleasure of meeting him) who told students that the ideal term paper would just be one word. You and I have a different approach; however, I do believe we consider many of the same things. I love the stories you tell and the meaning and themes behind what you write. I don't think we can ever escape sadness as it is a routine part of life. We try to celebrate the losses we experience so that we can move on and enjoy that which we have. Smiles, of course to a real philosopher! Be well!!

Thought provoking Duke, there's too much sadness at the moment with crackpots and their twisted ideologies. You don't have to follow religion to lead a decent life and respect your fellow man. We live in dangerous times. Tom

Tom, I agree completely!! It's always fun to look at ancient philosophies that sometimes encompass religious beliefs from an academic standpoint. I am always amazed at how people from thousands of years age understood much about human behavior (perhaps more than most of us today). There's a lot to be learned and thought about that is totally independent of religion or faith. While there's a lot we'll never understand, I don't necessarily chalk it up to a sentient being. Our society is in jeopardy, and how unfortunate more people don't get it. I am wishing you well and sending smiles!!
