Letting Go - For Contest
LETTING GO
Lingering claw marks denied my compliance
Etching my desire into their defiance
Tears that say good-bye to ages passing
Tears that hide a Dad’s love everlasting
Indifference, feigned stoicisms lie -
Nurturing the strength to let them fly
God may be the wind beneath their wings
God may promise them eternal things
Only Dad contains the tears each parting brings
Crayon marks adorn the open door
scratch marks from a long discarded toy
old Chevy waits – the one we had to store
clenched tears announced “her unit must deploy”
footie pajamas
marching in a distant dust
children seeking peace
