Letter to Africa
Oh how I long to see ancestral home
It’s majestic mountains and valley roams
The vast seas and grassy lands
From rivers deep to desert sands
I am an unwilling transplant
Brought as a seed within man woman
Transported against their will
Stolen away for their genes and skill
Africa will you pray for me
As I plot to visit you happily
I feel we will get along fine
And chat as if no passage of time
You will see me in reflection of you
The old tales that told of my truth
You I hope not to disappoint
For my bones share the motherland’s anoint
Will your spirit remember my own
I wish to feel it that welcome home
I may dress foreign and not speak the tongue
But one look and you’ll know where I’m from
